Lamanai (submerged crocodile)
This ancient Maya site is off the beaten track as it is spread out along the west bank of the New River Lagoon. Getting to this amazing site is quite the adventure. Along the way an array of colorful and exotic bird, wildlife and plant species can be seen. Lamanai’s main structures and excavated artifacts exhibit many representations of the famed crocodile.
The city of Lamanai began its regional supremacy around 1500 B.C. and is believed to have had a population of as many as 35,000 people at the height of the city’s power.
Lamanai features some 800 structures including the second largest Pre-Classic structure in the Mayan world. Views from atop these structures can only be considered magnificent. Also found at the site is a 13ft stone mask of a Mayan king and a well chronicled stalea depicting Lord Smoking Shell. An interesting feature of the site is the discovery of tombs that document female ruler ship of the site.
